Hungarian National Card: Application Acceptance Officially Started

On July 9, 2024, Hungarian authorities officially started accepting applications for the Hungarian National Card, or Nemzeti Kártya, granted to those opening a company in Hungary. Applicants can obtain a residence permit for up to 5 years, but only citizens of 8 countries qualify.

Hungary National Card launched

The Hungarian National Card is issued to citizens of the following 8 countries:

  • Bosnia and Herzegovina;
  • North Macedonia;
  • Belarus;
  • Moldova;
  • Montenegro;
  • Russian Federation;
  • Serbia;
  • Ukraine.

Qualification requirements for the Hungarian National Card include setting up a company in Hungary and being employed there. The minimum authorised capital is €7,700. Additionally, applicants must rent or buy property in the country to confirm their registered address.

The applicant’s spouse, children under 18, and dependent parents are also entitled to residency.

The validity period of the Hungarian National Card is 2 years, extendable for up to 3 years.

To maintain the status, the entrepreneur and their family must spend at least 183 days per year in Hungary and confirm that the company remains operational and generates income. The Hungarian National Card holder must earn at least €1,500 a month as a company director.

After three years of legal residency in the country, investors and their families become eligible for permanent resident status, followed by citizenship after an additional 8 years.
Third-country investors who do not qualify for a Hungarian National Card still have an opportunity to apply for a Hungary Golden Visa and acquire a 10-year residence permit.
